Looking out for a distracted driver

On Behalf of | Aug 14, 2023 | Car Accidents |

Distracted driving is a dangerous behavior that remains prevalent on California roads. When drivers are distracted, they may not see a bicyclist, pedestrian or another vehicle until it is too late. A vehicle does not have to travel at a fast speed, nor does a driver need to be distracted for an extended period to cause a collision. However, many drivers continue to engage in distractive behaviors that make them dangerous. For the sake of safety, commuters need to be aware of the signs that drivers are distracted.

Signs of distracted drivers

There are numerous ways a driver can become distracted. Rubbernecking at accident scenes or drinking coffee at the wheel are common ways someone can divert their attention from the road. The growing popularity of infotainment systems presents scores of distractions built into the dashboard touchscreen as well. Smartphone integrations can make things even more dangerous.

The hands and eyes of distracted drivers are often not where they belong, which is on the road. Therefore, when someone sees another driver looking away from the road or notices that their hands are occupied with something other than the steering wheel, these are signs of distraction. Becoming a more defensive driver upon seeing these actions can prevent an accident.

Additional behaviors of a distracted driver

Those hoping to avoid motor vehicle accidents can keep their eyes open for other signs of distraction on the road. When the vehicle appears to drift into other lanes, that is a sign the driver is not paying attention to the road. The same can be true when a driver hits the brakes hard, intending to avoid going through a red light or hitting another vehicle.

Distracted driving accidents can result in victims suffering from catastrophic injuries or worse. In the aftermath, those victims may file a lawsuit to recover their losses. An auto liability policy might cover the compensation claims.

He actually persuaded me not to settle because he believed that we had a great case. So we took the case to trial and he fought like crazy for me. And we won! It was a really good experience —well, as much as it can be for a lawsuit — and I’m very happy I went with them. I’ve been really blessed to have him as my attorney, so I recommend him whenever I can.”
