Distractions maim and kill: Avoid these common distractions

Of all the things that can make you furious at another driver, the idea that they weren't even looking at the road when they hit you is one of the most significant. The reality is that more and more people know the dangers of texting and driving, fiddling with their radios, taking phone calls and otherwise being distracted. However, they continue to do it every time they're behind the wheel.

Some of the most common causes of distracted driving include:

  • Zoning out
  • Handling pets or children
  • Setting the GPS
  • Texting
  • Talking on the phone
  • Applying makeup
  • Adjusting the radio

With so many potential distractions, it makes sense that there would be accidents caused by distracted drivers. What drivers need to know is that they can reduce the risk of getting into crashes as a result of distractions.

Drivers can become aware of potential internal and external distractions, like the occupants inside a vehicle or people, places or things outside their vehicle. Remembering to focus on the road, even when there might be other items of interest around you, will help you avoid near-misses and accidents. In fact, you may even be able to prevent a crash that would have been caused by someone else's negligence or distractions.

Distracted driving affects all age groups, and it simply cannot be ignored due to the threat it poses. If you suffer injuries because you were hit by someone who wasn't paying attention to the road, you have a right to file a claim and hold them accountable for their actions. An experienced attorney can offer valuable guidance.
