Apple wins case but implements safety features to protect drivers

California is a wonderful state with many great qualities. Unfortunately, there are also some bad things that happen here. While the days are warm, and activities are common, that also means that there are higher chances of being injured by drivers if you're a pedestrian in a roadway or parking lot.

One thing that could reduce the number of crashes significantly is if people would stop being distracted behind the wheel. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem like it will be a reality.

When people get distracted, they're more likely to crash into others. They might not even notice that they've done so. Then, they look for others to blame. In a recent report, it was Apple facing the blame. A lawsuit claimed that it was FaceTime's fault that a fatal crash occurred.

A driver was using the program while behind the wheel. In fact, after the 20-year-old driver collided with another family's vehicle, the call was still connected. The family lost their 5-year-old child in the collision and suffered injuries as well.

Apple did win the case in court, owing no duty of care to the family. However, it later implemented the "Do Not Disturb While Driving" feature in iOS 11. This blocks calls and messages while a person is driving, which makes it harder for them to become distracted by the iPhone. Passengers are able to use the phone without lockout, which is the exception to the tool's rules. A study revealed that this has already reduced the usage of the phone while driving by around 8 percent.
