A truck driver has been arrested and faces multiple charges in connection with a fatal accident involving a toll booth earlier this month. The accident occurred on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 2. A box truck collided with multiple vehicles and then the toll booth at the Bay Bridge, killing the toll worker inside the booth, according to the California Highway Patrol.
There was a line of vehicles waiting at the toll around 5 a.m., on Saturday morning when the box truck plowed into them. The truck continued towards the toll booth after causing the chain-reaction crash and slammed into the booth. Authorities said that the truck driver was thrown from the truck and suffered major injuries.
After being taken to the hospital, the driver of the truck was placed under arrest and charged with manslaughter and driving under the influence. The name of the truck driver has yet to be released by authorities. It is also not known if the truck driver is still in the hospital or not.
There were multiple lane closures at the toll booth for the Bay Bridge for more than 17 hours. All lanes reopened around 10 p.m. Saturday night. The toll booth worker who passed away has been identified as a 46-year-old female. It is not known how long she worked as a toll taker at the Bay Bridge.
