Avandia Injuries - Defective Diabetes Drugs

Avandia Litigation Attorneys in Los Angeles, California

Type 2 Diabetes is a serious metabolic disorder affecting over 20 million Americans.   When caught early Type 2 Diabetes is often treated with increased exercise and diet modification.  However, medication is usually needed as the disease progresses.

In 1999 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Avandia for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes.  Avandia was found to improve blood sugar levels in patients using the drug.  Over seven million people worldwide use the drug with its use peaking in 2006, resulting in sales that year of 2.5 billion dollars.

In May of 2007 the FDA issued a safety alert for the use of Avandia and other drugs that contain rosiglitazone which are often prescribed to people suffering from Type 2 Diabetes.  Specifically, the FDA stated that clinical trials had showed a "significant increase in the risk of heart attack and heart-related deaths in patients taking Avandia."   Furthermore, the FDA made public findings from the manufacturer of Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline, that patients using Avandia "may have a 30-40 percent greater risk of heart attack and other heart-related adverse events than patients treated with placebo or other anti-diabetic therapy."  Prior to 2005, GlaxoSmithKline did not alert the public of any danger in taking the drug.

In July of 2007 and FDA advisory committee concluded that the use of drugs containing rosiglitazone, such as Avandia, for the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes was associated with a greater risk of myocardial ischemic events (such as heart attacks, heart failure or heart valve ruptures).  Additionally, the use of rosiglitazone has also been suspected of causing Macular Edema, which can cause partial blindness at certain angles of vision.

If you or someone in your family has suffered from heart failure, heart attack or had heart valve damage after taking the drug Avandia or another drug containing rosiglitazone, you need to contact a pharmaceutical liability attorney at Ball & Roberts.   Your initial consultation is free, with no obligation.  Please call 626-793-2117.
