Product Liability, Da Vinci Surgery Complications May Be On The Rise

A reported increase in the rate of injuries involving da Vinci robot surgeries raising concerns.

Da Vinci Surgery Deaths Are On The Rise

September 23, 2014

Da Vinci surgery complications may be on the rise. A draft analysis of robotic surgery complications conducted by a research team led by a Rush University Medical Center surgeon found "an overall increasing trend in the rate of injury and death reports" involving da Vinci robot surgeries. The study focused on all adverse events reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between January 2000 and December 2012 and found that da Vinci surgery deaths increased sharply after 2004. Robotic surgery injuries and deaths were reported at a rate of 13.3 per 100,000 procedures in 2004. In 2012, the da Vinci death and injury rate increased to about 50 per 100,000 operations. The FDA has received almost 4,800 adverse event reports involving robotic surgery complications, including 85 da Vinci surgery deaths. The da Vinci robot is a multi-armed tool controlled by a surgeon viewing a high-resolution magnified image of the surgical site. Da Vinci robots are most commonly used to assist with procedures such as hysterectomies and prostatectomies. Patients who were injured during robotic surgery or lost a loved one as a result of da Vinci surgery complications are seeking legal action against Intuitive Surgical for product liability. About 50 da Vinci surgery lawsuits have been filed on behalf of patients who were injured or killed as a result of da Vinci surgery complications.
