Brain Injury Attorney Stephen C. Ball Leads Continuing Legal Educational Program

Southern California lawyers gain the opportunity to enhance their jury selection skills at ABOTA event.

Brain injury attorney Stephen C. Ball, of Pasadena civil trial law firm Ball & Roberts, was invited by the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) to chair a session of Los Angeles's Masters on Jury Selection program. The program was designed to help attorneys just beginning trial practice to master jury selection, as well as experienced trial attorneys who are interested in observing new ideas and methods.

Jury selection, or voir dire, is to many lawyers the most unnerving part of any trial, because it is not only the first part of the trial but the only part that is unscripted. Ball was selected to lead this Masters on Jury Selection program based on his extensive civil trial expertise, specifically as it applies to the art of voir dire, and his particular specialty in brain injury and accident cases.

The program showed participants how experienced trial lawyers conduct voir dire, through lecture and demonstration before a presiding judge and a real jury panel. In the hypothetical case tried during this particular program session, a woman was hit by a truck while crossing the street, and suffered a brain injury. The program dealt with all of the complications of such an incident, bringing to bear all the experts, damage issues and economic implications involved in a trial of this nature. Participants of the exercise were able to learn about brain injury complications, as well as all the considerations that go into successful jury selection and determining bias for multi-faceted cases.

In addition to valuable professional tips and training, Participants in the program received credit toward the Minimum Continuing Legal Education required by the state Bar of California.

ABOTA is a national organization dedicated to the preservation of the right to a jury trial and the promotion of civility in the courtroom. All proceeds from the Masters On Jury Selection program went into the ABOTA foundation, helping ABOTA to promote its goals and educate people of their rights to a civil jury trial.
